From what I'm hearing, this is the 4th racist attack and stabbing in the tallaght area in the past number of weeks.
 It's a gang of teens numbering between 20-30 running around with knives. The only reason this one has made the news is because a person who came to his aid made a video about it after. The guy was practically stripped naked and stabbed. Then they made false allegations saying he was a pervert. 

This same gang is believed to be involved in the other attacks.

Youth justice reform is badly needed. Any party promising it would hoover up votes. I'm all for rehabilitation etc... but people under a certain age face no consequences whatsoever for their actions. 

We now have racist lynch mobs in certain parts of the city - but no real way of punishing the perpetrators even if they were caught and convicted.

Tallaght is a massive area and as such it has nice and not so nice parts. It has a bigger population than Waterford City. The area the attack took place in is Kilnamanagh which would be considered quite a nice and safe part of Tallaght.

The problem with teenagers is they can break the law and subsequent bails and curfews repeatedly because Oberstown - the only child detention facility - is full. So bail conditions and curfews simply cannot be enforced.

Yes Irish people know of the attack. There was a big solidarity protest in Tallaght this evening which was covered by mainstream news. In comparison there were just 8 counter demonstrators.

I grew up in Tallaght, I had problems with other teenagers in the area growing up, lots of fights etc but I always felt that was normal as a kid. I never thought of it as being any rougher than any other parts of Dublin. In fact as I got older I started to enjoy living in Tallaght more and more. I have lots of friends from there and there are lots of genuinely good people living in Tallaght. 

The actions of one group of scumbags does not define a place.

My read here is that it's been taken very seriously in the last few days. I've seen multiple calls from guards for more information, multiple articles have been written about it and there was a protest in Tallaght about it today. Every Irish person, bar absolute thick morons, are heavily condemning this attack.

In short, there is a combination of things happening here. Gardaí are both understaffed and just generally slow. There is issues with gangs of young men here finding their fun in 'abusing' anyone who they can find an excuse to abuse/attack - I'm a white Irish woman and I've been at their mercy a few times too. Teens rarely face any justice for violence, so they feel emboldened. Areas of poverty cause boredom and violence.

In general these attacks are very very rare, Dublin is a safe city. Tallaght is generally safe, it's just poorer and as a result any incidents like this tend to happen there. I'm really hoping that the public outrage and protests will light a fire under the guards for once and the people who attacked that poor man are brought to justice.

I am sorry you feel unsafe however. I think it's valid to feel unsafe after seeing what happened.

The juvenile laws here are heavily weighted towards not saddling U-18's with a criminal record for life unless it's a very, very serious offence. These laws need really need updating to reflect modern society, but would be a political challenge doing so, so I doubt any political party would want to start down that road. We also have very few juvenile detention spaces, so if the laws were updated, a new facility would need to be built. Again, that would be politically unpalatable.

Tallaght is a vast area. It is larger than some Irish cities but it's policing resources does not reflect that. Tallaght was originally a rural village in the hinterlands of the Dublin mountains, with some private estates built in the part of Tallaght closer to the city end. In the 70's and 80's the government moved people from the dilapidated living conditions in the inner city out to newly built council housing estates. Unfortunately, facilities like shops, public transport, social, employment  and recreation facilities and even basic things like streetlights and footpaths were not included and people re-located from the inner city felt abandoned. This poor planning was replicated in other areas like Clondalkin, Coolock, Blanchardstown too whch experience the same issues today.

The economy in Ireland was in the toilet at this time, but in those new areas of Tallaght it was even worse, with very high levels of unemployment. Heroin became a thing in Dublin and these areas soon after and brought with it all the resultant social problems and crime.

To an extent, these areas have never really recovered from those days despite Tallaght now having a university, hospital, good public transport and better social and retail and employment amenities.

There are two Tallaght's really, you have the settled private estates like Kilnamanagh, Kingswood, Tymon etc and some of the areas mentioned above out in West Tallaght where social problems can still be quite bad. The vast majority of people in Tallaght are lovely, but unfortunately incidents like the attack continue to give the area a bad name.

1. The Irish justice system is set up to not criminalise anyone under 18 and to give them as many chances as possible to reform before they are treated as an adult at 18. This system worked well about 15 years ago when it was better to only lock up children for really serious crimes like murder and give those outside of that another chance. But things have evolved and teenagers today realise they can commit crime with no real consequences. That must change. 
2. Yes Tallaght is less safe than most other areas of Dublin. But also yes incidents are often seen as just another crime, they are spoken about for a day or two and then everyone moves on. No one ever stops to take stock and say we have an overall crime problem in Tallaght that needs specific action and more Garda resources. For example in Tallaght there have been 21 murders in the last 12 years but no one is saying that Tallaght has a serious problem with the crime of murder. But it does and the crime stats bear that out.

Hey, all fair questions, I'll try to answer for you from my perspective at least. 

1. Tallaght is a huge, as far as Dublin is concerned. 
There are roughly 90k-100k people here over quite a large area and socioeconomic spectrum. 
There are areas that are worse than others, where antisocial behavior is common and most attacks go unreported. 
Where the attack happened is a mixed housing area, it lays in-between several estates and has large open spaces and a quiet ring road that unfortunately does traffic some antisocial behavior. Attacks are not common here though, which (in combination with the horrible details) I feel is why it is so shocking. Most people here have harshly against this behavior and racism over all, but the alt right has become dangerous.

2. Yes we do. Attacks happen and especially in cities but this is far beyond what we're used to. 

3. This was at least discussed on national radio, but I can't comment on national news as I don't have a TV connection. 

4. The laws against violence are quite harsh, and rightly so, we also have laws against hate speech and hate crimes. The issue I feel here is lack of resources. 
In Tallaght, there is 1 station to manage an area more populace than most counties, it's underserved and it's not an individual Garda's fault. 

5. Similar to 4, they have power when they have the resources and permission to act. 
The larger issue here is the higher ups may not feel this is a case worth pursuing, not because of the attack, but because there were a large number of people involved, there will likely be an air of silence and it will be very difficult to prosecute. 
The area the attack happened would not be well served by CCTV, there may be doorbell/home camera footage but the quality will be poor. 
This to me is not a good reason to not act, but I don't make the calls. 

6. If the man was killed, they would be very fast to act but in this country not much happens without a death. The fact that the attackers were allegedly minors does not help this. 
Again, I hate that and want to see the attackers severely punished. 



What are my closing thoughts?
Well, I am frustrated with the performance of AGS over all. 
Be it an attack that's never solved, the general dismay of their force ("what do you want me to do about it?" Attitude) or the brazen Motorcycle theft that Garda on the street don't have permission to chase even when they witness the crime in action, the organization has been falling short and failing the people they serve. 

Again, I don't blame the individuals, they have to answer the "dispatch" who will often follow a bureaucratic stance, rather than a just one.

1: As another poster pointed out, Tallaght is as large or bigger than some cities in Ireland so thus has good &amp; bad areas. Kilnamanagh, where this happened, and where I live, would be considered fairly safe. There have been issues in the past with teen gangs coming from other areas and causing shit; I'm not for one second saying "Kilnamanagh kids wouldn't do this," but for context. An elderly (Irish) man was also attacked &amp; robbed in the last number of weeks whilst out for a walk by a gang of teens.

Personally, I feel that currently young people do not have the fear of the Gardaí that I would have had as a teen 20+ yrs ago. As also stated, the youth detention system is full so there's not really any deterrent if the youth courts are revolving doors.

Irish are some of the nicest people in the world. I've worked with them, met them on travels - both domestic and international - and they are amazing people. They've been through horrors at the hands of the English and have deep empathy for India.

In every country there are places that it's better to avoid - ask any local anywhere..  Even more so if you're alone and just "hanging around" for no apparent reason.  


There have been an increasing amount of "immigrants" in Ireland who are trying to kidnap kids and it's led to a lot of paranoia in the lower income communities via social media.
